Dull overcast day with some drizzle. Many swifts around flying quite low at tree top level after their flies. A few Mayflies about.The blue tits and great tits in their nestboxes are still eeding their chicks.
One strange thing about this year is that there are very very few female ducks about on the river. At this time of year they are either hiding from the raping of the males, or sitting on eggs but to have seen so few ie 1 on the river for the past 3 weeks is very unusual. That one female manages to hatch about 8 young, i would have to check my videos, which lasted less than a week before succumbing to predators thought to be gulls, mink and pike. This female i know well as in previous years she had a nest on my boat but i had to stop her nesting as the mink found them and was eating all the eggs, such a shame.
